I give guided tours of historic sites to academic audiences and the general public.
Introducing university students to Corfe Castle, Dorset
I have twenty years’ experience as a guide in and around historic sites, including over a decade providing tours to the general public and specialist interest groups at the Roman Baths Museum in the World Herotage city of Bath and, more recently, as a volunteer guide for English Heritage at Goodrich Castle in Herefordshire.
I have also led undergraduate field trips around Corfe Castle in Dorset, and the Roman sites of Carleon and Caerwent in south Wales.

I am able to apply my academic knowledge of the ancient, medieval and early modern past to help inform my tours.
This means that I can provide their wider political, social and cultural context to my audience, and help to explain how the sites fitted within the landscape and society of which they were a part.

The sites are not just the remains of the past. They are not just ruins to be walked over, nor are they simply the sites of major events; a series of dates to be recounted.
Where possible I include the stories of the people who lived, worked or worshipped in them. It is the interaction of people and place that is key to understanding them, and to bring them alive for my audience.
